Thinking Differently:
Findings from the i-Lead Generational Study
Research into the cognitive patterns of workers indicates that Generation Y is “wired” a bit differently than any generation before – can your business handle the divergence?
Generation Y is hitting the workforce and will overtake the Baby Boomers to become the largest working demographic within the next 5 years. How do they differ from the previous generations? What motivates them? How will businesses draw them in their talents?
With unique motivations and promise, Generation Y represents a potentially complex challenge for employers. What motivates them? What starts and stops them? How does their behavior really differ from other generations before them and how will businesses need to adapt to attract, retain and leverage their talents? Answering questions such as these may mean the difference between success and failure in a global economy dominated by the need for superior knowledge and service.
In the winter and spring of 2008, a joint venture research team representing i-Lead Systems, Wings and Nu U Consulting, examined cognitive pattern type differences among Generation Y workers and students, using the internationally renowned i-Lead assessment. The team conducted the first generational analysis of cognitive patterns—as opposed to demographics or opinions—that are the basis for our day-to-day individual behaviors. The results indicate that unlike any generation before them, Generation Y is built quite a bit differently.
